>> taylor swift brings down the house at the grammys. she was the opening act. this is way too early, the show that has an indy record much cooler than yours. what? thanks for being up with us this monday, february 11th. we've got a lot to get to this morning, including the big cleanup here in the northeast. many people still struggling to dig out from under as much as 30 inches of snow after the weekend blizzard. we're going to update you on those efforts as well as the travel situation at the hardest hit airports. dick cheney calls president obama's national security picks quote, second rate as some republican senators keep maneuver to stall the nomination of chuck hagel for the pentagon. those stories straight ahead. first, let's begin with rap, rock, r and b and pop all colliding for the 55th annual grammy awards. a good night for veterans like adele and jay-z.

the evening began for the new artists, fun, gotyea and black keys. they got the coveted album of the year. juxtapositional star appearance, honoring bob marley and lee von helms. potential wardrobe malfunctions. the producers put out a memo and told them to avoid see through clothing and song type costumes. we'll show you which stars got the memo and which ones did not in the cooler. in other news, president obama will deliver his state of the union tomorrow night. he's expected to push for more investment in infrastructure and clean energy. he'll zero in on the issue of the middle class advocating for what he described last week as a, quote, economy that works for everybody. tomorrow's speech is also going to focus on immigration, climate change and gun violence.

big themes from the president's inaugural address last month. then on wednesday the president hits the road. he goes to asheville, north carolina. a three state tour. the presidential barnstorming is also going to hit atlanta and chicago later in the week. in tuesday's speech in the house chamber the president is going to come face to face with his congressional critics, including those who are now vowing to oppose his nomination for top cabinet spots. lindsey graham is leading that efrt. he's threatening to hold up those picks until the white house delivers more information on the september 11th attack in benghazi. >> i don't think we should allow brennan to go forward for the cia directorship, hagel to be confirmed as secretary of defense until the white house gives us an accounting. did the president ever pick up the phone and call anyone in the lebanese government to help these foes? what did the president do? i'm going to ask my colleagues

controversial drone program. gates is supporting a proposal to create a special court for the use of drones abroad. back at home, members of congress remain focused on deficit spending and the sequestration spending that will take place next month. pelosi and cantore laid out the economic divide line. >> what we need is growth. we need growth with jobs, and if you have spending cuts, the education of our children and other investments, like the national institutes of health, where you are hindering growth, you're not going to reduce the did he have silt. it is almost a false argument to say we have a spending problem. we have a budget deficit problem that we have to address. we think the deficit and the national debt are at immoral levels. we think they must be reduced. we're sick and tired of paying interest on a national debt and

murder rate. michelle obama attended the funeral. she met privately with the victim's family and friends. the two people being questioned in the pendleton case, police in chicago say no questions have been filed so far. a massive man hunt continues today in california. he's accused of killing 3 people. a $1 million reward is being offered for the arrest of christopher dorner who is considered 5r78d and extremely dangerous. miguel almaguer reports. this is christopher dorner dumping a gun belts, a helmet and ammunition. the surveillance video was captured across the street from a san diego police station. >> the helmet was sitting right up top and the magazine and the belt was hidden under the boxes. >> reporter: the former cop now

fugitive accused of killing three and wounding two others was fired from the lapd after making false complaints about his training officer. but now the los angeles police chief says a week after the killing spree began he'll reopen dorner's case. >> people think that maybe there is something to what he says and i want to put that to rest and the only way i know how to put that to rest is to review what has already been reviewed at multiple levels. >> retired police chief bill bratton ran the force when dorner was fired in 2008. >> determination would definitely be justice. you don't justifier somebody without significant evidence and information. >> reporter: the search for dorner in the mountains is in its fourth day with investigators now saying they've discovered a cache of weapons and camping gear in his broken down truck. this as the tsa issued an emergency bulletin to regional

skyline of the city, new york city. check of the weather, nbc's around the clock meteorologist bill karins. >> i have nothing good to tell anyone. >> a lot of weather content. >> did you see the tornado yesterday? >> i did a twister. >> it was a large one too. this was very impressive stuff. i am still so amazed. this thing was on the ground for miles and miles and it didn't kill anyone. i mean, it's incredible that people got out of the way. there were some 50 some injuries. houses completely destroyed. there was an ace hardware store that doesn't even exist anymore. this was hattiesburg, mississippi. this was on the ground well past hattiesburg too. you can see the debris blowing around the bottom of that thing. amazing stuff there. just glad that no one was killed. we don't have any tornadoes to talk about today. we still have that heavy rain from the same storm in the deep south. we've had some flash flooding in the same areas hit by tornadoes. in areas of georgia and southern alabama, you may have lightning and damaging winds. the heavy rains are dangerous

enough with the flash flooding. the northeast, we're on the heels of an amazing historic snowstorm which dumped as much as 40 inches of snow in areas of southern connecticut. mind boggling snow totals from northern long island with plus 30 inches all the way up to maine with 35 inches. how widespread the snow was is just crazy. people are still digging out. still 100,000 people without power. the next mini system is coming through. the roads have been cleared. we have freezing rain, sleet and snow moving into the areas that were just hit by this big storm. this is not going to cause too many long-term issues. just for the morning commute. for this morning there are a lot of school delays, a lot of one or two hour delays and the snow and sleet has already started in the hudsonvillely and birk shears. since i'm the bearer of all good news, this upcoming weekend another big storm could be

coming for the east coast. this isn't set in stone. we're starting to see the signs, the potential. it's too early to tell if it's going to be rain, snow, who's going to get nailed. there's a huge trough in the east coast. it allows all the cold air to spill down from the far northern reaches of canada. we'll watch that. again, that's next weekend. it looks like another saturday/sunday type storm. we will warm it up after the freezing rain in new england. temperatures will warm up and melt some of that snow. the rest of the country, oh, yeah, the blizzard conditions are ending in wisconsin and minnesota after you got nailed yesterday. in the southeast, we have your rainy weather. we have a couple of weak storms this week. we have one on wednesday that could bring snow between new york city and baltimore. next weekend is the big potential for a winter event. >> air travel back to normal? >> it's starting to. bradley international, they tried to open up last night or

this morning they're trying to get back to normal. again, we have the winter weather this morning which will cause more delays. >> bill, thanks so much. appreciate it. from weather to sports. big weekend for basketball. we're going to look at a trio of great nba match-ups. nuggets are taking their nine game winning streak. final seconds of the game, nuggets down. kie lawson, banks it in. we're headed to overtime. 25 seconds remaining in o.t. jeff green now knocks down a three here. game is tied at 99-99. we go to a second overtime. now clock winding down in the second overtime. paul pierce drains a game-tieing three. five seconds to go. that pushes it now to a third over time. score tied at 113-113. boston goes up for good. the celtics win a grueling game. it lasted more than three hours. they win it 118 to 114. in boston they're scratching their heads and celebrating.

they're 7-0 since rajon rondo was lost to the season with a new injury. they're still doing it. lakers take on the heat. koeb by bryant shakes up a defender, gets it in. lakers are down by one. later in the third, dwyane wade gets the feed. throws it down. awesome. he takes a three-pointer. coach comes in, turns the ball over. he keeps it inbounds. take it down to, you guessed it, lebron. finishes it off with the dunk. set a franchise record. he has five straight games now. 38 points or more. the heat win it 107-97. now here in new york knicks down the street at madison square garden. one handed slam there. clippers go up by 7. third quarter now carmelo an be though any trying to make something happen. he ties the game with a three. 42 for the night chris paul

finds room. game for the clippers. they take it 102-88. little baseball news, pitchers and catchers are going to report today in spring training. the red sox already having some problems. top prospect, bryce brent, the first round draft pick in 2010 will miss a lot of spring training because he accidentally shot himself in the foot cleaning his gun. hate when that happened. fortunately i guess the bullet went through his left leg, came out the other side. according to the general manager of the red sox, ben cherington, brant is not going to have his future with the taem affected by that little accident. finally on "way too early" we love minor league sports. promotion nights, loveable mascots. we're not sure though we entirely endorse this area. the bakersfield con doors took their mascot, a 30 pound bird of prey out on the ice during the national anthem. kind of scoots away here. this is yesterday's game. the bird gets away.

the handler losing control and watch what happens. the giant bird proceeds to fly into the home bench terrorizing the players and the coaches. not able to retrieve the bird instantly. luckily the team says the condor was not hurt. he was taken back. the players scramble. not ideal to let the birds on be the ice. top of the hour on "morning joe," talk about the push back to president obama's cabinet picks now that not only members of congress are talking up but former vice president dick cheney chiming in. the "morning joe" crew is going to break that fight over the president's nominees down and what it might mean for a divided government going forward. and when we come back here, we'll huddle around the water cooler. lewis is going to bring us all the big moments from last night's grammy awards. hopefully lewis will not do anything. that's on "way too early" exclusively on msnbc after this.

version of suit and tie. there were powerful vocals by kelly clarkson. jack white sang love interruption. hughes was ripping it on the guitar. he smashed his guitar at the end of his performance. clarkson and fellow female powerhouses adele and carrie underwood got awards last night. it was the guys who won big. their hit we are young won. they are not young. belgian australian artist gotyea won record of the year. mumford and sons won the night's biggest prize, album of the year for their album battle. the most talked about moments twitter is talking about rihanna and chris brown snuggling together all night long. they look very cozy. chris brown stayed seated while everyone else gave frank ocean the award. brown was nominated in the

category. you can recall the two artists got into a scuffle in the recording studio. there's obviously some beef there. he's still clapping though. everyone seemed to adhere to this year's strict dris code. the most talked about red carpet moment. when you see katy perry there. jennifer lopez showing some leg there. her high split dress looked odd over exposed limb at last year's mark. >> that is a nice leg. >> no photo shop there. very firm and muss koor lar. host l.l. cool jay was sincere. he was not a frequent twitter user. he's fascinated with the word hashtag mentioning it out throughout the night. he reacted to this clip of himself on dick clark's american band stand. >> what were you going to do before you became a musician?
